Peace of Heaven - Review

“Peace of Heaven” is pianist/composer Solomon Keal’s fourth release to date, and consists of fifteen original solo piano tracks of a very peaceful, spiritual nature. There are no hard edges and no minor key darkness on this CD, but it isn’t sugary-sweet, either. In the liner notes, Keal reflects on the inspiration for his music, allowing us into his thoughts and giving us insight into how religion and spirituality have affected and guided his life.

“Peace of Heaven” begins with the title track, a gentle piece of musical contentment about the calm that comes in the rare times when we feel “a sense of heavenly peacefulness,” knowing that everything will work out for the best and there is no need to worry. Serenity flows from this lovely work, setting the tone for the album. I also really like “Thoughtfulness,” a quiet and gentle piece about doing things for others from the heart rather than out of obligation. Warmth and kindness fill this piece with a special kind of love. “Memories” is an improvisational piece that is built around four chords. Deeply introspective, it deals with the idea of facing memories from the past, happy and sad, that have shaped our lives. A kind of internal peace comes from dealing with all of that. “Surrender” is a beautiful piece that tells of letting God into our lives and allowing his will to be done through us - a difficult thing to do. Some of the music gives a sense of inner conflict and struggle, but is not turbulent or agitated. “Life After Death” deals with the bittersweet emotions we experience when someone dies, but also the hope of an eternal life in a better place. “Hymn of Gratitude” is a hymn without words, and a song of gratitude that should be in our hearts all the time. “Angel’s Birth” was composed as the processional for Keal’s wedding. Keal believes that when two spouses are in heaven, they are called one angel, so a wedding here on earth is the date of birth for an angel in heaven. Light, tender, and loving, it’s a beautiful piece.

If you’re in the mood for some spiritually uplifting music, “Peace of Heaven” is a good choice. It is available from www.solomonkeal.com and cdbaby.com.

Advent - Review

Of all the Christmas music I have (and I have a lot), this CD is the most relaxing. All the instrumental piano selections are quietly and evenly toned which makes for a perfect reading background.

The variety of pieces is also nice, from “Away in the Manger” and “Angels we Have Heard on High,” to spirituals “Go, Tell it on the Mountain” and “Rise Up Shepherd and Follow,” and “The Wexford Carol” and “In the Bleak Midwinter.”

Originally I got this CD because it had “Rise Up Shepherd and Follow” on it. Because of the beautiful simplicity of all the pieces, it is now a top favorite of mine. Whether Christmastime or not, this will be one of my booklover’s listening CDs.

Performer and Pennsylvanian Solomon Keal is a pianist to watch for.

Advent - Review

“Advent” is a collection of sacred Christmas music arranged for solo piano and performed by Solomon Keal. What is especially nice about this collection is that several less-common pieces are mixed in with the well-known songs, creating a beautiful change of pace from the overplayed holiday songs that often become stale and tiresome after awhile. All of the arrangements are quiet and peaceful, and are intended for unwinding, relaxing, or for a backdrop to an elegant dinner or worship. All of the songs have enough complexity for active listening, but there are no hard edges or discordance. Keal keeps the melodies in the forefront without a lot of fancy fingerwork or showmanship. He is confident enough in his capabilities to keep the songs simple and honest - and very heartfelt. Keal purposely arranged each of the fifteen songs in a different key - an interesting approach!

Highlights include lovely versions of “What Child Is This?” and “O Come, Come Emmanuel.” I always love their haunting melodies, and Keal does a beautiful job with them, adding some personal touches between the verses. “Blessed Night” was a new song for me, and a great discovery. The melody is gentle and sweet with just a touch of melancholy. “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” has such a sense of grace and dignity, and this is a especially nice arrangement. “When The World Was White With Winter” is another new one for me, although it is an old French carol. Another beauty, Keal’s spare arrangement creates a chill as well as a sense of stillness. “The Wexford Carol” goes back to the 12th century. Its simple melody is given minimal accompaniment and is very touching. Keal also includes two African-American spirituals, “Rise Up Shepherd and Follow” and “Go Tell It On the Mountain,” and gives them the gentle treatment he has bestowed upon the other songs. I think the melody of “The Coventry Carol” is one of the most heartbreaking melodies ever composed, especially knowing the history of the song. Keal’s version is exceptional and deeply moving. The CD closes with a sweet and tranquil arrangement of “Away In a Manger” - such a gentle lullaby.

“Advent” is a great addition to your collection of Christmas music to enjoy as an antidote to the hustle and bustle of the holidays - a cup of musical hot cocoa!

Advent - Review

“Advent is a terrific collection of well-crafted variations on traditional Christmas hymns and songs. Solomon Keal manages to work themes that we all know into new and unexpected arrangements, without sounding over-done or self-indulgent. With over an hour of music, Advent is the perfect CD to accompany a quiet Christmas gathering. I will be listening to it all season long, and probably even beyond!”

Peace of Heaven - Review

“Your work is so moving it’s beyond words, and has this distinct tendency to make ones eyes misty. What incredible internal beauty and delight it evokes. It’s as if the cup is continuously spilling over.”

Peace of Heaven - Review

“Wow Solomon, the samples from “Peace of Heaven” are great! My favorites are Thoughtfulness, Footsteps in the Sand, and Contentment. I think there is something new to these pieces compared to your earlier ones, and the only word that comes to mind is “maturity.” I think this will be a very good album!”

Heritage - Review

I have to conclude that all humans have the same feelings connected to certain kinds of music. How else can I explain that Solomon Keal’s music connects with my feelings in exactly the way he has designed it to, according to the titles of the pieces and liner notes on “Heritage”? The CD takes me from a lively joy through many feelings to a quiet serenity. I will only note here some highlights of my experience. “Sunset” takes me to a place of review, of looking back to learn from my immediate past. A picture of the sun can leave me uncertain about the time of day, but this piece is definitely not sunrise! “My Faith” sounds like the inner strength that a genuine faith provides, which is very distinct from an external dogma, which is harsh and strident. “Courtship” prepares me for the marriage of thought and feeling, of the completion of a process of reflection that motivates me to action in the future. But first, there is need for rest, which “Sweet Dreams” and “Sleep Well” provide for me. I am permitted to put aside the work of the past, and the anticipated tasks of tomorrow. As I end this hour of reflection on who and what I am, and where I am and where I am headed, thus my heritage and its impact on the future, Keal invites me to raise my inner sight to the source of my life and its story, my Creator who is my God, the source of life. I now have a sense of the promise of the future, not determined by my past, but connected to my heritage.

General Review

“Solomon Keal is the next George Winston. If you haven’t heard his music yet take a listen, buy a CD, download an MP3, or something, anything to get a chance to sit back, relax and find peace in New Age Piano the way it was supposed to be played. Solomon has the touch of a master and the heart of a poet. His own spiritual journey is reflected in the passion and inner peace of his compositions. Each track is a personal testimony to peace, compassion, faith, and hope. I have been listening to Solomon Keal music for years. His peaceful solo piano music is everything that new age music should be: passionate, relaxing, meditative, and beautiful.”
